Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
LEED was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 1998 as a system for classifying sustainability, and is based on the British BREEAM Standard. The rating system is simple to apply and the rating results can be readily communicated and marketed.
- It features Certificate types, independent from each other, for new-build designs, recently completed buildings, and for properties which have existed for some time.
- It serves as a public confirmation that a building is particularly environmentally friendly and was designed according to the best possible ecological standards.
- By means of suitable product choice and building technology optimisation, it focuses on reducing the fossil fuels used both in the creation of the building materials, and also during the building’s operational phase.
- The Certificate works with internationally harmonised benchmarks and is thus of particular use to globally active investors.
The points system helps different sustainability criteria to be incorporated into a checklist with features and design possibilities which support the design process between architect, engineer, owner and constructor.
